I embroider and am fascinated by Chinese embroidery techniques。 I also make Silk Road Trader's costumes (I'm a member of SCA) and this book was very helpful。 I embroider and am fascinated by Chinese embroidery techniques。 I also make Silk Road Trader's costumes (I'm a member of SCA) and this book was very helpful。 。。。more

This was a gift ten months ago。 I have been waiting for time to do justice to it in a review。 I have only once tried Chinese embroidery, a project using filament silk (http://jillian-alwaysstitching。blogsp。。。) which I found difficult。 During this year the Embroiderers' Guild Exhibition in which I was involved attracted some entries that used Chinese embroidery techniques, including a number by the talented and expert Margaret Lee, so this book has been timely。The first chapter is a useful Brief This was a gift ten months ago。 I have been waiting for time to do justice to it in a review。 I have only once tried Chinese embroidery, a project using filament silk (http://jillian-alwaysstitching。blogsp。。。) which I found difficult。 During this year the Embroiderers' Guild Exhibition in which I was involved attracted some entries that used Chinese embroidery techniques, including a number by the talented and expert Margaret Lee, so this book has been timely。The first chapter is a useful Brief History of Chinese Embroidery。 I have been back to this several times to remind me of an historical context with which I am completely unfamiliar。 The second chapter outlines, in some detail, the tools and materials of Chinese Embroidery and how to apply them。 The illustrating photographs in this chapter are really useful and include coverage of making some very specialised threads ( horse-tail- hair and peacock, for example)。 The lengthy (46 page) third chapter outlines stitches。 The illustrations for these are superb - clear and detailed。 It is easy to identify the similarities and differences in the way theses are worked and applied in Embroideries other than Chinese。 My favourite bits of this chapter are the tiny projects at the end of stitch descriptions。 I could see myself working some of them - and having that feeling is really important when faced with a new and unfamiliar embroidery tradition。 The 44 page fourth chapter outlines 19 projects for household projects。 There are six of these that I can see myself trying: the Pierced Chrysanthemum Napkin, the Name-Card Case embroidered with a Pattern of Dual Ruyi, the Bookmark Bag with Calabash Pattern, the Miao Ethnicity Embroidery, the Embroidery Pouch of Shui Embroidery and the Pillow Cover with a pattern of Blessing of Many Children and Good Fortune。 The book has seduced me。 It has moved me from a belief that Chinese Embroidery is lovely and beyond me, to a feeling that I could try some stitches through tiny projects that might give me confidence to try some larger, but still smallish projects and maybe then, one of the projects outlined in Chapter Five: Artistic Embroidery Projects。 。。。more

This book gives a good historical overview of embroidery in China as well as a general overview of tools and supplies in the beginning。 But, the real heart of the book is the step-by-step photographic stitch guide。 Additionally, there are a number of traditional patterns included。 These are fairly simple and small, but would be a good start to exploring Chinese embroidery。 Ethnic embroidery is also touched on。 My favorite part of the book however is the appendix of Chinese embroidery stitch name This book gives a good historical overview of embroidery in China as well as a general overview of tools and supplies in the beginning。 But, the real heart of the book is the step-by-step photographic stitch guide。 Additionally, there are a number of traditional patterns included。 These are fairly simple and small, but would be a good start to exploring Chinese embroidery。 Ethnic embroidery is also touched on。 My favorite part of the book however is the appendix of Chinese embroidery stitch names with both the Chinese characters and pinyin。 Since I live in China, this is essential for me to be able to talk with embroiderers about the embroidery being done。 。。。more

As the bookshops where I live don't really stock art and craft books and I can't buy an instructional book without looking inside, I had to wait till I went to London to find this。 It's full of beautiful photos and clear instructions。 I'm really pleased with it and can't wait till I have time to start a new project。 As the bookshops where I live don't really stock art and craft books and I can't buy an instructional book without looking inside, I had to wait till I went to London to find this。 It's full of beautiful photos and clear instructions。 I'm really pleased with it and can't wait till I have time to start a new project。 。。。more
